Jutes, Demi Lovato‘s fiancé, recently opened up about his heartfelt proposal to the pop star, which took place in December 2023. During his appearance on The Viall Files podcast on October 10, Jutes, 33, shared the unique and emotional way he asked Lovato, 32, to marry him.
To set the stage for the big question, Jutes revealed that he wrote and performed a song for Lovato, who uses she/they pronouns. “I’m not a guitar player, but I can kind of play some chords,” he explained. “It took me about a week just to write the chords for this song. Then I wrote the lyrics, and practiced until I got it right.”
The song concluded with the proposal, but getting there wasn’t easy. “I would mess up three out of four times in rehearsals,” he admitted. “When the time came, I knew I just had to get lucky and nail it. I definitely almost broke down crying a few times.”
Jutes, whose real name is Jordan Lutes, shared how he coordinated the surprise with Lovato’s team, making sure she was completely unaware of his plans. Confident in her answer, he wanted to catch Lovato off guard. “We had talked about marriage before,” he said, “but I knew she wasn’t expecting it at that moment.”
The couple met in early 2022 while collaborating on Lovato’s song “Substance” and her album Holy Fvck. They went public with their relationship in August 2022 and made their first red carpet appearance together in February 2023. In December 2023, Jutes proposed with a pear-shaped diamond, marking a new chapter in their relationship.
Lovato recently expressed her gratitude for having Jutes in her life, telling PEOPLE in September, “I’ve waited my whole life for him. His support and love make everything so much sweeter.” She added, “It’s very grounding to have someone who’s so supportive, so caring. I love him so much, and he treats me so amazingly.”
