Céline Dion has unveiled an official recording of “Hymne À L’Amour,” paying tribute to the legendary French singer Edith Piaf during a momentous performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony. This marked Dion’s return to the stage, her first since revealing her diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome in 2022.
Performing against the iconic Eiffel Tower, Dion’s rendition of Piaf’s classic not only honors the late singer, who passed away 61 years ago but also signifies Dion’s comeback to music after a challenging hiatus. The 56-year-old artist had previously released the single “Love Again” in conjunction with the 2023 film of the same name, marking her only other new music since her diagnosis.
Dion expressed her appreciation for fellow singer Kelly Clarkson, who had shared her emotional response to Dion’s Olympics performance. In a heartfelt social media exchange, Dion praised Clarkson’s Kellyoke rendition of “My Heart Will Go On,” stating, “You were absolutely incredible. Fantastic. I loved it so much.”
Clarkson, reflecting on the significance of Dion’s approval, recalled her own experience on “American Idol” in 2002, when she performed Dion’s “I Surrender All” despite suffering from laryngitis. The memory brought back feelings of vulnerability for Clarkson, who was anxious about performing in front of the iconic singer.
Both artists share a deep respect for one another, with Dion’s recent performance serving as a poignant reminder of her enduring legacy and resilience.
