Shawn Mendes is taking a little extra time to perfect his forthcoming self-titled album, now set to be released on November 15, 2024. Originally scheduled for October 18, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter announced the delay via his Instagram Stories, expressing his desire to incorporate fresh inspirations into the project.
“My team and I have decided to push the album release date to November 15,” Mendes wrote. “We just need a little bit more time to bring some new inspirations and ideas to life.” He also took a moment to thank his fans for their patience, adding, “I can’t wait to see you guys at the next few shows.”
The announcement was accompanied by a behind-the-scenes photo of Mendes during a photoshoot, standing with his guitar in front of an orange backdrop.
In addition to the album, Mendes revealed that he will release a concert film titled “For Friends and Family Only” on November 14, just one day before the album drops. “This was my first time performing the album and my first show back in 2 years,” he said in a separate Instagram post featuring a clip from the film. “It was really beautiful. I really wanted you all to be able to experience it.”
Filmed at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, N.Y., the concert film promises more than just a musical performance. According to the official synopsis, Mendes shares personal stories and insights behind each track, offering fans an intimate glimpse into his creative process. “The cinema events will provide an unforgettable opportunity to experience Shawn in a completely unique way before its official release date on November 15th,” it stated.
Mendes first announced his fifth studio album on July 31, releasing several singles, including “Nobody Knows,” “Why Why Why,” and “Isn’t That Enough.” This album is described as Mendes’ “most musically intimate and lyrically honest work to date.”
Reflecting on his journey, Mendes previously shared his struggles with mental health and his experiences recording the album. “Music really can be medicine,” he wrote. “Two years ago, I felt like I had absolutely no idea who I was. A year ago, I couldn’t step into a studio without falling into complete panic. So to be here right now with 12 beautiful finished songs feels like such a gift.”
The new album comes in the wake of Mendes postponing and eventually canceling his 2022 world tour to prioritize his mental health. “As you guys know, I had to postpone the past few weeks of shows since I wasn’t totally prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take on me,” he shared. He emphasized the importance of taking time for self-care, stating, “I unfortunately have to cancel the rest of the tour dates in North America and the UK/Europe.”
Earlier this month, Mendes reflected on his decision during an appearance on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast, describing it as the “hardest” and “greatest” choice he’s made. “I knew there was only one way of doing that. And it was by just creating a life,” he said, underscoring the importance of balance in his life and career.
