After nearly a decade of separation, Sister Wives star Meri Brown has officially ended her spiritual union with Kody Brown through their church, the Apostolic United Brethren. In an upcoming episode of the reality show, Meri, 53, opens up about the emotional process of seeking a “release” — the church’s equivalent of a divorce.
The former couple, who legally divorced in 2014 to allow Kody to marry his fourth wife, Robyn, had remained spiritually married until now. Meri revealed that she initiated the process by texting Kody. “I texted Kody and said, ‘Hey, I started the process. In two weeks, if you want to give any input, have anything to do with it or whatever,’ and he never responded,” she said.
Describing the recent trip to Utah where she met with church leaders to finalize the separation, Meri shared her struggle with the decision. “I was granted what is called in our church a release, which is basically the equivalent of a divorce,” she explained. “It was a very, very hard conversation… heartbreaking because this is not what I wanted to do.”
Despite the legal divorce in 2014, Meri said their spiritual bond had remained strong at that time. “For me, that whole process was purely for the fact that he could then marry Robyn legally and adopt her three older kids,” she recounted. “But our spiritual marriage, our spiritual sealing was still intact.”
On a recent episode of Sister Wives, Meri explained her reasoning for seeking the church divorce, saying, “I don’t want to be, like, sealed to him for eternity if he doesn’t want me.” She added that she had grown tired of “living in limbo” and sought clarity after years of waiting for Kody’s response.
However, Kody held a different perspective on their separation. “The damage was done so badly that we’re not going to reconcile no matter what,” he said. “So I’m going to let Meri go and do her thing because if I’m angry at her, it becomes a fight.”
After 32 years together, Meri and Kody publicly announced their separation in January 2023. Over the past year, Kody has also parted ways with two other wives, Christine and Janelle Brown, leaving Robyn as his only remaining spouse.
