Chris Pine remains unsure if he’ll be reprising his role in the upcoming Princess Diaries 3, though he’s thrilled about the film’s revival. While fans eagerly anticipate Anne Hathaway’s return as Mia Thermopolis, Pine, who played Nicholas Devereaux in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, revealed he’s in the dark about his involvement in the new movie.
During his appearance on Today with Hoda & Jenna on October 8, Pine, 44, responded to questions about the third installment of the beloved franchise. When asked if he would join Hathaway, he told hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, “I don’t know anything.” Bush Hager expressed surprise, saying, “You have a major role in it,” to which Pine replied, “Call Disney. Call Bob Iger,” indicating he had no information from the studio.
Pine did, however, share his excitement for the project, saying, “I think it’s fantastic.” The actor’s character, Nicholas, famously declared his love for Mia at the end of the second film, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. Fans hope Pine will reunite with Hathaway for the upcoming sequel.
The new installment will be directed by Adele Lim, a self-professed fan of the original movies. In a statement to Variety, Lim expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I’m beyond excited to bring this beloved franchise back to life. We look forward to celebrating its core values of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
Hathaway, who recently shared her excitement about Lim’s involvement, also responded to fans’ anticipation for Princess Diaries 3 last year, telling PEOPLE, “It’s thrilling to see the level of excitement for it.” Acknowledging the long wait, Hathaway encouraged fans to embrace the process, saying, “This is how long it actually takes to make things.”
As the team gears up for a new chapter in Genovia, fans will have to wait and see if Pine’s Nicholas will once again join Mia on the big screen.
