In a recent interview with PEOPLE, “Outer Banks” stars Madelyn Cline and Madison Bailey shared their playful aspirations for a new romantic pairing on the hit Netflix series as anticipation builds for the upcoming fourth season.
Cline, who portrays Sarah Cameron, and Bailey, who plays Kiara, revealed they have been secretly “plotting” for their characters to explore a romantic connection. The actresses discussed this scheme ahead of the season premiere, hinting that they would love to see Sarah and Kiara become love interests.
Bailey humorously remarked that the developing relationship between Kiara and JJ (played by Rudy Pankow) might jeopardize her hopes for a “Kiara gay agenda.” In response, Cline quipped, “We’re throwing the metaphorical spaghetti on the wall,” though she admitted their ideas haven’t quite taken hold yet.
Despite Sarah being married to John B. (Chase Stokes) and Kiara finally exploring a relationship with JJ, Bailey maintains that her and Cline’s idea of a Sarah-Kiara pairing remains a “dream scenario.” She reassured fans that “John B. and JJ will make each other very happy” and insisted that all characters will ultimately find their happiness.
This isn’t the first time Bailey has advocated for the exploration of Kiara’s potential “fluid” sexuality. While she hasn’t pushed the storyline aggressively, she expressed hope that future seasons will delve deeper into Kiara’s character. “I think everybody’s like, ‘She’s a little fluid. We’ll figure it out later,’” Bailey stated.
While they envision potential romantic developments for their characters, both actresses expressed excitement for the existing storyline. Bailey explained, “I’m rooting for [Kiara and JJ], absolutely.” She characterized Kiara as being in a more open place for a relationship while JJ grapples with his insecurities.
In addition to their romantic dilemmas, Cline and Bailey’s characters are set to face new challenges as the Pogues—alongside fellow characters Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant)—are drawn back into the high-stakes world of treasure hunting, this time in pursuit of Blackbeard’s legendary fortune.
Both actresses noted that, unlike their adventurous characters, they would be more cautious in real life. Bailey humorously questioned Kiara’s impulsive decisions, expressing, “I’d ask a lot more questions.” Cline echoed this sentiment, saying, “I need a cut,” playfully aligning herself with Rafe’s (Drew Starkey) motivations in the series.
As fans await the new season, Cline and Bailey’s lighthearted banter and insight into their characters’ dynamics keep the excitement alive for what’s to come on “Outer Banks.”
