Shania Twain, the iconic country singer, shared her inspiring journey of recovery and renewed passion for music during the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards on September 26. Speaking to PEOPLE on the red carpet, Twain reflected on the profound impact of her open-throat surgery, which enabled her to regain her singing voice after years of vocal cord issues.
Twain, 59, candidly discussed how the surgery reshaped her perspective on performance. “Losing my singing voice for several years made me confront my fears,” she said. “Having to undergo open-throated surgery reset my reality, and I realized I had another chance at something I love.”
Her determination to overcome challenges was fueled by “the voice” and a steadfast desire to persevere. Twain emphasized that the creative aspects of her career keep her motivated after more than three decades in the industry. “I love new songwriting and production,” she noted. “There’s so much more to being an artist than just performing, and I enjoy sharing that journey with my fans.”
Twain’s struggles began after being diagnosed with Lyme disease, which damaged the nerves in her vocal cords. After years of therapy and vocal rehabilitation, she underwent surgery in 2018 to restore her singing ability. “I may not be able to sing forever, but I’m enjoying where I am right now,” she stated.
In a recent revelation, rock legend Jon Bon Jovi credited Twain with guiding him through his own vocal challenges, leading him to undergo the same surgical procedure under her surgeon’s care. “She reassured me that everything would be okay,” Bon Jovi shared.
On the fashion front, Twain stunned in a denim halter gown adorned with rhinestones, paired with matching gloves and a striking blue ring. As she prepared to host the awards show, she expressed her excitement about showcasing country music with glamour and flair, saying, “I’m focused on making it a great show.”
Twain’s journey of resilience serves as a powerful reminder of the strength that lies in pursuing one’s passion against all odds.
