George Clooney and Brad Pitt have shown their sense of humor by embracing age-related jokes in their latest film, “Wolfs,” according to director Jon Watts.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Watts revealed that both actors were receptive to the script’s playful take on their ages. “That was one where you put it in the script and you cross your fingers and you hope that they don’t get mad,” said Watts, who is also the film’s writer and director. “But no, they liked it. It was just the right amount and it was things that I think they were totally fine having some fun with.”
“Wolfs,” an upcoming Apple TV+ action-comedy, features Clooney, 63, and Pitt, 60, as rival fixers hired to handle a high-profile crime. As their mission unfolds, the two characters, who start off as enemies, must collaborate, leading to unexpected chaos.
At the film’s premiere during the Venice Film Festival earlier this month, Clooney reflected on his long-standing friendship with Pitt while sharing some light-hearted banter. “There’s nothing good about it,” Clooney joked to PEOPLE, shaking his head. “It’s all a disaster.” He then added more sincerely, “It’s fun to work with people you know really well.”
Clooney and Pitt, who are longtime friends and frequent collaborators, attended the premiere with their significant others, Amal Clooney and Ines de Ramon. The film also stars Amy Ryan, Poorna Jagannathan, and Austin Abrams. Both Clooney and Pitt produced “Wolfs” through their respective production companies, Smokehouse Pictures and Plan B Entertainment.
Watts emphasized the difference between “Wolfs” and the previous “Ocean’s” films where Clooney and Pitt portrayed friends. “They hate each other in this one, so that immediately makes it feel different but also gave them something really fun to play,” Watts noted. He added with a laugh, “Because they’re such good friends in real life, it creates this sort of need in the audience where you just want them to be friends. It makes people frustrated in a good way.”
“Wolfs” will hit select theaters on September 20 and stream on Apple TV+ starting September 27.
