Fans of Wizards of Waverly Place were recently sent into a frenzy after David Henrie teased a potential return of his former co-star Gregg Sulkin in the upcoming series revival, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
Henrie, 35, who portrayed Justin Russo in the original Disney Channel series, shared two behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) of himself and Sulkin, 32, on set. Sulkin, best known for his role as Mason Greyback, a werewolf and love interest of Alex Russo, appeared alongside Henrie in the snaps, immediately sparking fan speculation.
“Guess who visited settttttttttt 🐺? The one and only @greggsulkin,” Henrie captioned the images, accompanied by a playful wolf emoji, hinting at Sulkin’s iconic character. Fans were quick to inquire whether Sulkin was merely visiting or actively involved in the new series. In response to a fan on X asking, “Just visited set or filmed on set? 😎,” Henrie kept things cryptic, stating that Sulkin was just “visiting” — but left the door open by replying with, “For now… 😜 💜” to another curious fan.
The excitement extended to the Instagram comment section, with fellow Disney alum Danielle Fishel, from Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World, commenting: “Whaaaatttt!!? Two of my absolute favorites together is almost too much. ❤️”
The Return of Wizards
The revival series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, was officially announced earlier this year, with news breaking in January that original cast member Selena Gomez, who played Alex Russo, would not only guest star but also serve as an executive producer. The first images and title were revealed during the ABC and Disney Upfronts event in May.
According to the official synopsis, the new series follows an adult Justin Russo as he navigates life as a regular mortal with his family — wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) and children Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). The storyline takes a twist when Justin’s sister, Alex, played by Gomez, seeks his help to mentor a young wizard-in-training named Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown). Justin is soon forced to dust off his magical skills while juggling his everyday responsibilities and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World.
Potential Cast Returns
Henrie isn’t the only original cast member fueling rumors of a return. In a February episode of their Wizards of Waverly Pod, David DeLuise (who played Jerry Russo) and Jennifer Stone (Harper Finkle) confirmed they had spoken with Henrie about reprising their roles. DeLuise, 52, hinted that while their characters may not appear right away, there is potential for them to return later in the series.
“David [Henrie] has said after the pilot, you know, which apparently now when you do a pilot you don’t have the back nine already,” DeLuise explained. “So once that happens, I think Jerry Russo and Harper down the road could come back because we’re in that world.”
Stone echoed the sentiment, expressing confidence in the revival’s success: “I think it’s going to be successful, and I think everything is going to work out.”
Premiere Date Set
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is set to premiere with a two-episode debut on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. ET on Disney Channel. The first eight episodes will be made available on Disney+ and Disney Channel On Demand the following day, Wednesday, Oct. 30.
Fans of the original series are eagerly awaiting to see what magical adventures await the Russo family — and whether familiar faces like Mason Greyback will make their return to Waverly Place.
