David Beckham, despite the critical acclaim of his Netflix docuseries, has candidly admitted to disliking much of the experience behind its creation.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society event on September 17, Beckham, 49, revealed the filming process was fraught with difficulties. According to Variety, Beckham described the experience as “very difficult,” confessing, “I hated almost every moment of making it…it was very difficult.” The former soccer star noted that the project made both him and his wife, Victoria Beckham, 50, feel “nervous.”
Beckham elaborated that it took him considerable time to come to terms with producing the docuseries. “There were a few reasons why we wanted to make it,” he explained. Initially, Beckham was reluctant to revisit his storied career following his retirement. However, he changed his perspective during the pandemic when the popularity of documentaries surged and as he approached the tenth anniversary of his retirement from football.
The soccer icon also addressed the public’s perception of his family, noting that despite their extensive media presence, people do not truly know them. “As much as people think they know everything about us, they don’t really, and we don’t really let those doors open to our house,” Beckham said. “But I knew it was the right time [to tell] the story.”
On a more positive note, Beckham expressed enthusiasm for Victoria’s forthcoming Netflix docuseries. He praised her as an “amazing woman” who has transitioned successfully from being a Spice Girl to a respected businesswoman. “She’s a strong, driven, passionate person,” Beckham added. “She’s worked hard for 18, 19 years on her business and suddenly she’s having the success she deserves.”
