Jill Whelan, known for her role as Vicki Stubing on the iconic series The Love Boat, has expressed her enthusiasm for a potential sequel to the beloved show. Speaking to PEOPLE aboard Princess Cruises’ Enchanted Princess during The Love Boat Celebration at Sea, Whelan shared her excitement about revisiting her character.
The cruise, which embarked from Brooklyn, NY, on August 31 and ventured through New England and Canada, featured a host of activities including Q&As with Whelan and her co-stars Fred Grandy, Ted Lange, and Bernie Kopell. The event underscored the continued popularity of The Love Boat, with Princess Cruises planning another similar event in Galveston, Texas, in 2025.
Whelan, now 57, fondly recalled her time playing Vicki Stubing from the age of 11. She reminisced about how the show’s “incredible cast of human beings” guided her early in her career. Reflecting on Vicki’s journey, Whelan mused about exploring her character’s personal growth and romantic life, jokingly suggesting that Vicki might even be on her third marriage, much like Whelan herself.
Whelan also shared her gratitude for the support she received from her co-stars and her mother. She praised her castmates for their professionalism and kindness, which she said shaped her development as an actor and person. Whelan also discussed the challenges she faced, including her experience with producer Douglas Cramer, who she described as “horrible” and problematic. Despite these challenges, Whelan remains optimistic, attributing her resilience to the guidance of her mother and the lessons learned from her colleagues.
In addition to reflecting on her career, Whelan mentioned her role as Celebrations Ambassador for Princess Cruises. She fondly recalled personal memories, including spending quality time with her family on cruise vacations. Whelan also highlighted the traditions she cherishes, such as playing cards with her stepfather and enjoying meals with family.
As The Love Boat Celebration at Sea concluded on September 7, guests enjoyed various forms of entertainment, including magic, comedy, and live music. The event solidified the enduring appeal of The Love Boat and showcased Whelan’s continued connection to her iconic role.
For now, fans of The Love Boat can look forward to future celebrations and potential new projects involving the cherished cast, while Whelan continues to embrace both her personal and professional journeys.
