Reality Star Highlights Diverse Lifestyles and Dispels Stereotypes in the Mormon Community
Mayci Neeley, star of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, is redefining the image of modern Mormon women and challenging common misconceptions. Appearing on The View alongside fellow influencer Taylor Frankie Paul on Sept. 12, Neeley discussed the evolving lifestyles of Mormons, emphasizing that the faith is not as rigid or outdated as some may think.
Responding to a question from co-host Sara Haines about common misconceptions, Neeley pointed out that many people still associate Mormons with outdated stereotypes like polygamy and strict dress codes. “We’re the modern Mormons; everyone’s not so cookie-cutter,” she explained. “You can be Mormon and wear a tank top. You can be Mormon and be more of a tradwife. You can do it all.”
The discussion then shifted to the role of tradition within the Mormon community, as guest co-host Chelsea Clinton asked about societal expectations and how they impact members of the church. Neeley, who grew up in California, described her upbringing as less traditional compared to Mormon communities in Utah, saying, “I’ve never followed the traditional norms of the culture of the church.”
Taylor Frankie Paul added that she, too, had a less conventional experience. “I did what I wanted but still went to church on Sundays,” she said, emphasizing that the show aims to depict the diversity of lived experiences within the Mormon faith. “Everyone does live different lives. You see a devout member, and then you see someone who left the church.”
Ultimately, Neeley and Paul clarified that their goal with The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is not to represent the Mormon Church as a whole, but to tell their own stories and dispel the notion that all Mormons fit the same mold. “We don’t want to represent the church. We’re just telling our story,” Paul concluded.
