Teezo Touchdown, the Texas-born sensation, is taking a moment to pause and reflect on a remarkable year. The 31-year-old artist has been riding a wave of success, marked by high-profile collaborations and critical acclaim.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Teezo, born Aaron Lashane Thomas, discussed his journey over the past year, including being named Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Year. This accolade follows a series of milestones that have catapulted him into the limelight. The artist’s debut album, How Do You Sleep At Night?, released a year ago, received praise from fellow stars such as Drake, who called it “some of the best music ever.” Teezo also featured prominently in Kendrick Lamar‘s chart-topping summer hit, “Not Like Us.”
Reflecting on his whirlwind career, Teezo shared his experience of constant motion and personal growth. “I finally get the time to take a breather and reflect on not only this last year but also since March 2019 when Trippie Redd flew me to Los Angeles,” Teezo told PEOPLE following his performance at Billboard’s Hip-Hop Live concert in Brooklyn on September 6. “I’ve been running since then, not having a stable place, just living on the road. It really weighs on you.”
Now, Teezo is prioritizing self-care to maintain his public persona. “So right now, I’m taking care of Aaron to make sure that Teezo Touchdown can be the star that everyone sees. That’s where I’m at,” he said.
Adding to his achievements, Teezo received the Billboard Rookie of the Year award at the R&B Hip-Hop Power Players 2024 event, a milestone he celebrated with an energetic performance at Xanadu in Brooklyn. Dressed in a red bucket hat and tank top, Teezo’s style and presence remain as dynamic as ever.
Despite his growing fame and success, Teezo maintains a humble perspective. “What we’re seeing now is a room full of people who have seen me before, or this is their first time; it’s all about just giving me a chance,” he said. “I owe it to them, the next time that they see me, to show that something has elevated. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”
