In the wake of an unimaginable tragedy, Sister Wives star Janelle Brown, 55, has found a way to reconnect with her ex-husband, Kody Brown. The pair, who share multiple children from their plural marriage, have been supporting each other since their son Garrison died by suicide at age 25 on March 5.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Janelle opened up about how Garrison’s heartbreaking death has brought some members of their family closer, even as they navigate the complexities of their relationships. Reflecting on the loss, Janelle shared how this tragic event has reshaped bonds within her extended family.
“Especially with the children, Christine’s children, Meri’s child, my children—it’s really reinforced relationships and maybe renewed some that were struggling,” Janelle explained. “They’ve drawn closer, and that’s been wonderful to see because once you become adults, you tend to drift away.”
Despite the grief and their “busy lives,” Janelle noted that the children have made intentional efforts to reconnect and be there for each other. Although the adult members of their plural family live “separate lives” now, Janelle revealed that she and Kody continue to check in on each other as they navigate their respective grieving processes.
“Kody and I periodically check on each other, and he’s grieving in his own way,” Janelle shared. “I live a very separate life from him now, but I do wish everyone well. Tragedy, in some ways, gives you perspective—it makes you less angry, perhaps.”
Kody and his wives—Meri, Christine, Janelle, and Robyn Brown—were known for documenting their unconventional family dynamic on TLC’s Sister Wives. However, within a span of 14 months, three of Kody’s marriages unraveled. Christine was the first to announce her split from Kody after more than 25 years in November 2021. A year later, in December 2022, it was revealed that Kody had separated from Janelle. By January 2023, Kody’s relationship with Meri, which had been distant for years, also officially ended.
Though the family dynamic has shifted, Janelle remains hopeful about maintaining a close relationship with all of the children, regardless of her separation from Kody.
“I want to be involved with all of the children, forever and ever and ever,” Janelle expressed. “I love spending time with them. And Christine and I remain close. Even though our lives are heading in different directions, we still maintain a strong bond.”
As for her relationship with her former sister wives, Janelle hinted that fans may see some reconciliation between her and Meri in the upcoming season of Sister Wives.
“I really do hope for the best for Kody, Robyn, and Meri,” Janelle added, emphasizing her wish for healing and goodwill for the entire family.
As Janelle and Kody continue to cope with the immense grief of losing their son, their shared history and family ties remain a source of strength amidst the pain.
