Katy Perry made a triumphant return to the MTV Video Music Awards stage, receiving the prestigious Video Vanguard Award on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024. With fiancé Orlando Bloom by her side, Perry revealed that their 4-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove, was watching her perform on MTV for the very first time.
In a preshow interview, the 39-year-old pop superstar shared the heartwarming moment, sending a playful message to her daughter: “Don’t stay up too late, sweetheart. Eat your broccoli.” Perry also spoke about how becoming a mother has transformed her life. “I feel good. I’ve had my daughter, and it’s changed my whole life,” she said. “I feel a sense of wholeness and more grounded. I’m writing songs from a place of feeling truly empowered, truly connected to my feminine divine. It’s changed my life for the better.”
The 2024 VMAs mark Perry’s first performance on the MTV stage in seven years. She is set to deliver a medley of her greatest hits, celebrating her remarkable career. Perry now joins a legendary list of past Vanguard award recipients, including Shakira, Madonna, Beyoncé, The Beatles, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Justin Timberlake, and Janet Jackson.
“Katy is a musical powerhouse and a true pop culture icon,” said Bruce Gillmer, Paramount’s president of music, in a statement. “With her game-changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages. Katy’s prowess will be on full display LIVE on the VMAs with a can’t-miss performance celebrating her biggest moments and chart-topping hits.”
Perry’s night at the VMAs follows her recent appearance at the premiere of fiancé Orlando Bloom’s film, The Cut. After watching the film, Bloom shared that Perry was deeply affected by the performance. “She watched it and was like, ‘I need a stiff drink,’” he said, later adding that she was moved to tears.
