The enduring mystery surrounding the tragic death of JonBenét Ramsey is set to receive a dramatic retelling, with Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen taking on the roles of the young victim’s parents, Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey, in a new limited series from Paramount+.
Announced on Thursday, Sept. 5, the series, tentatively titled JonBenét Ramsey, will mark the 30th anniversary of the six-year-old beauty pageant contestant’s unsolved murder. The show will chronicle the Ramsey family’s life before and after the infamous 1996 tragedy, focusing on their experience dealing with overwhelming grief while facing a media frenzy that turned their private tragedy into a national obsession.
At the center of the series is the “unbreakable partnership” between Patsy and John Ramsey, exploring how the couple, dedicated to presenting a picture-perfect life for their family, had that facade irreparably shattered on Christmas night in 1996, when JonBenét was found murdered in the basement of their home in Boulder, Colorado.
Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount Global and President/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, praised the casting, saying, “Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen are an extraordinary duo to delve into this tragic story that has haunted American culture for nearly three decades.”
David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios, expressed his excitement for the project: “We have been working to bring this thought-provoking and bold project to audiences for some time now, and could not be happier with the top-notch team working in front of and behind the camera.”
Paramount+’s Executive Vice President of Programming, Jeff Grossman, emphasized that the series aims to explore the complexities of the case with “the acuity and nuance it deserves.”
JonBenét Ramsey’s death, which shocked the nation, remains unsolved to this day. She was discovered beaten and strangled in her home on Dec. 26, 1996, and while her parents were later cleared of suspicion, the case has long been mired in controversy and speculation. Various film and documentary projects have attempted to examine the case over the years, but this new series will offer a dramatic interpretation of the family’s ordeal.
The 2008 exoneration of Patsy and John Ramsey, based on DNA evidence, remains contentious. Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett told PEOPLE in 2016 that the decision to clear them was “misleading.” At the time, DA Mary Lacy wrote a letter to John Ramsey stating, “We do not consider your immediate family—including you, your wife, Patsy, and your son Burke—to be under any suspicion in the commission of this crime.” However, Garnett noted that the complexities of the case did not fully justify an exoneration.
For McCarthy, this series will mark her return to television following her roles in Netflix’s God’s Favorite Idiot and Nine Perfect Strangers in 2022. Owen, known for his recent work in AMC’s Monsieur Spade and Disney+’s A Murder at the End of the World, will take on another intense role as John Bennett Ramsey in this highly anticipated series.
As the anniversary of one of the most infamous cases in American history approaches, the JonBenét Ramsey series promises to shed new light on the case that has captivated the public for decades.
