In a move that underscores their ambitions for the upcoming NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys are set to bring in veteran running back Dalvin Cook for a visit, following the recent signing of star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a lucrative contract extension. Lamb’s new four-year deal, worth $136 million, was finalized on Monday, setting the stage for further roster enhancements.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Cook is scheduled to meet with the Cowboys on Monday night. Pelissero notes that Cook, who has dedicated the offseason to intense training, is reporting a peak physical condition, claiming to feel the best he has in years. Cook’s 2023 season was marred by difficulties as he struggled to regain his form after shoulder surgery, resulting in career lows with the New York Jets—where he recorded just 67 carries for 214 yards and no touchdowns over 15 games.
Cook parted ways with the Jets in January and briefly joined the Baltimore Ravens, making a modest impact in the AFC Divisional Round against the Houston Texans with 23 rushing yards, including a 19-yard run on his first carry.
As a four-time Pro Bowler, Cook would bring significant experience and skill to the Cowboys’ backfield, potentially securing the top spot on the depth chart. The Cowboys, who are expected to employ a running back committee approach with Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle, have been adjusting their lineup following Tony Pollard’s departure to the Tennessee Titans.
Dallas, with aspirations of a Super Bowl berth, is keen on bolstering their roster. As Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott are set to drive the offensive game plan, adding a dependable running back like Cook could provide crucial support to the Cowboys’ passing game, aligning with their championship goals.
