Despite the album’s high-profile features, including contributions from Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and Ciara, industry insiders had tempered expectations for a major Billboard breakthrough. Earlier projections had placed Sugar Honey Iced Tea at No. 17 with just under 27,000 equivalent units.
The album’s performance has elicited a range of reactions from fans, particularly those of rival artists. Nicki Minaj‘s supporters took to social media to mock Latto’s results, with one fan account derisively noting, “FLOPPED LIKE EVERY ALBUM SHE HAS EVER DROPPED,” while another questioned, “that’s it? Ice Spice‘s fans, who have been vocal in their support, might have celebrated prematurely. Sugar Honey Iced Tea has outperformed Ice Spice’s debut album Y2K!, which sold 28,000 equivalent units in its opening week and peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard 200.
In contrast, Nicki Minaj demonstrated her commercial dominance last year when Pink Friday 2 debuted at No. 1 with nearly 230,000 units in its first week.
Latto’s album includes tracks like “S/O to Me,” where she appears to take jabs at Ice Spice, rapping, “Bye sis, funny thing about it, you can’t look me in my eye, sis,” and “Shoutout to myself / Who the hardest out?
