Steph Curry Stands by Drake Amidst Kendrick Lamar Feud

by Coco

Stephen Curry, widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of his generation, has long been a favorite reference for multiplatinum rappers. Since 2015, Drake has frequently likened himself to the Golden State Warriors superstar, fostering a public friendship that has lasted nearly a decade. Despite a tough year for Drake and his fans in 2024, Curry remains unwavering in his support for the Toronto rapper.

In a recent GQ Sports profile, Curry discussed his illustrious career and his involvement in the U.S. Olympics. However, the most surprising and intriguing part of the interview arose when the ongoing feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar was mentioned. Curry did not hesitate to back Drake, firmly stating, “I’m a big Drake guy. I’ve been for a long time.” Acknowledging the recent trend of criticizing Drake, Curry declared his loyalty, saying, “I think obviously you know what it is for the rap industry to have that. But I still rock with Drake. Absolutely. Absolutely.”

The tension between Drake and Kendrick Lamar came to a head when Lamar released the diss track “Meet the Grahams,” which included a jab at Curry. Lamar urged Curry to keep his family away from Drake, referencing allegations against the rapper. LeBron James‘ family was also mentioned in the track, but unlike Curry, James has shown a willingness to switch allegiances. Despite being a long-time Drake fan, James supported Lamar and even attended the Pop Out show on Juneteenth. This divide between Curry and James became evident during the Olympics when “Not Like Us” played. Curry expressed his frustration, saying, “Damn with this song. It’s not the only song in America.” In contrast, James proclaimed his love for the track.

Interestingly, Curry has never publicly commented on Kendrick Lamar. However, fans have noticed a peculiar pattern: every time Lamar releases an album, the Warriors win an NBA title. This trend occurred in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022, despite Lamar being a devoted Los Angeles Lakers fan. As speculation grows about Lamar potentially dropping a new album in 2024, fans are eager to see if the streak will continue.
