Canadian music icon Drake faced another setback in his high-stakes gambling endeavors, losing $300,000 in Bitcoin after Canada was defeated by Argentina in the Copa America semifinals.
Canada’s Underdog Status Foils Drake’s Bitcoin Gamble
Aubrey Drake Graham, famously known as Drake, is renowned for his lavish bets on major sporting events. This time, according to Decrypt, the rapper placed a $300,000 Bitcoin wager on Canada’s victory over Argentina in the Copa America semifinals.
Canada’s football team entered the match as significant underdogs, with odds of 9.60 to win. A victory would have netted Drake more than $2.5 million in Bitcoin. However, Argentina, the reigning world champions, triumphed with a 2-0 scoreline. The match saw Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi score the decisive second goal, crushing Drake’s hopes.
Drake’s Streak of Bitcoin Betting Losses Continues
CryptoPotato reports that this loss is not an isolated incident for the rapper. Just a month prior, Drake lost half a million dollars in Bitcoin betting on the Dallas Mavericks to defeat the Boston Celtics in the NBA championship. The Celtics secured their 18th league title with a 106-88 victory, resulting in another significant loss for Drake.
From NBA to MMA: A Series of Bitcoin Wager Defeats
In early 2024, Drake’s betting misfortunes extended to mixed martial arts. He wagered $700,000 in Bitcoin on Sean Strickland to win against Dricus du Plessis. The bet, if successful, would have yielded a profit of over $650,000 in Bitcoin. Unfortunately, Strickland lost in a split decision by the judges.
Drake’s losing streak also includes a bet of 234,000 Bitcoins on Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to win the Spanish Grand Prix two years ago. Max Verstappen emerged victorious instead. Additionally, he lost $600,000 in cryptocurrencies betting on FC Barcelona to win against Real Madrid in the “El Clasico.” Barcelona fell short, adding another loss to Drake’s betting record.
Despite his repeated attempts and substantial investments, Drake’s Bitcoin betting endeavors have seen a string of high-profile losses across various sports, from basketball and football to mixed martial arts and Formula 1 racing.
