Usher Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at BET Awards 2024

Usher, known for his chart-topping hits and significant contributions to the music industry, has now added the distinction of being one of the youngest recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The ceremony, dedicated to recognizing the industry’s most influential artists, celebrated Usher’s enduring musical legacy.

The night was filled with spectacular performances that paid homage to Usher’s illustrious career. Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, kicked off the tribute with an a cappella rendition of “U Don’t Have to Call,” soon joined by Keke Palmer. The medley continued to captivate the audience with Palmer performing “U Make Me Wanna” and Coco Jones delivering a powerful rendition of “There Goes My Baby.”

Additional performances by Marsha Ambrosius, Chloe, Tinashe, Teyana Taylor, Latto, and others added to the evening’s celebration. As Usher made his way to the stage to accept his award, he was met with cheers from his wife, Jenn Goicoechea Raymond. The award presentation was led by industry icons Kenneth Edmonds, L.A. Reid, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis.

In his acceptance speech, Usher humorously remarked that the award was given to him “too early,” referring to himself as an 8-year-old still “running and gunning.” He shared heartfelt reflections on his challenging upbringing without a father, expressing his perception of being unloved. Despite his speech being cut short for strong language, it left a lasting impact.

The BET Awards 2024 and Usher’s Legacy

According to a press release reported by PEOPLE, the BET Lifetime Achievement Award honors “special achievements and distinguished public service.” Connie Orlando, BET’s EVP of Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy, highlighted the longstanding relationship between BET and Usher, praising him for setting high standards in the music industry and exemplifying “black excellence.”

In addition to receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, Usher was nominated for four BET Awards this year and took home the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist award, further solidifying his status as a musical icon.
