In a heartbreaking incident, “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor Tamayo Perry was fatally attacked by a shark while surfing in Hawaii. The 49-year-old, known for his role in the fourth installment of the beloved film franchise, died on Sunday afternoon, as confirmed by Honolulu’s emergency services.
The tragedy occurred at Malaekahana Beach around 1 PM local time. Despite the swift response of emergency services and efforts to rescue him, Perry, who was also a skilled lifeguard, was pronounced dead upon being brought to shore by jet ski.
Perry’s portrayal of a buccaneer in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” brought him into the spotlight alongside stars like Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, and Geoffrey Rush. His filmography also includes notable appearances in “Lost,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Blue Crush,” and “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” as well as a memorable Coca-Cola advertisement.
Born and raised on Oahu’s east side, Perry had a decade-long career as a professional surfer and was a respected instructor at Oahu Surfing Experience. His passion for surfing was evident in his descriptions of riding “the world’s deadliest wave” and his pride in competing with the world’s best surfers. He had previously survived a near-fatal accident caused by another’s “lack of awareness,” showcasing his resilience and courage.
Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager paid tribute to Perry, calling him “a lifeguard loved by all” and highlighting his widespread recognition on Oahu’s north shore and beyond. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more,” Lager said, extending heartfelt condolences to Perry’s family.
Mayor Rick Blangiardi also expressed deep sorrow over Perry’s passing, emphasizing his legendary status and profound impact on the ocean safety community. “Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected,” Blangiardi remarked, urging for privacy for Perry’s family during this difficult time.
Perry’s untimely death is a significant loss, not only to the entertainment world but also to the surfing community and everyone who knew him. His legacy as a talented actor, dedicated lifeguard, and passionate surfer will be remembered fondly by many.
