US singer and songwriter, Maya Piata, is ready to light up Auckland with her unique blend of “sunshine soul,” a genre inspired by her Māori roots and the vibrant energy of her hometown, New Orleans.
Born from a special connection between her mother—a member of a Māori Performing Arts group on tour in the US—and her father, a poet and jazz musician, Maya’s music is deeply intertwined with both cultures.
Ahead of her performance at the Auckland Arts Festival next week, Maya Piata shared with Kathryn what fans can expect: a fusion of the cultures that have shaped her, as well as a glimpse into the personal experiences that influence her sound.
During the interview, Maya opens up about surviving the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, the diverse musical influences that inspire her, and what she’s most excited about during her time in New Zealand.
Stay tuned for what’s sure to be an unforgettable performance.
