Lorna Luft Gets Emotional Over Ariana Grande’S ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ At 2025 Oscars

Lorna Luft had a heartfelt reaction to the 2025 Academy Awards’ tribute to The Wizard of Oz.

The 72-year-old daughter of Hollywood legend Judy Garland took to Instagram to share her gratitude after Ariana Grande performed the iconic Somewhere Over the Rainbow during the Oscars’ Wicked medley on March 2.

“Thank you to @arianagrande, @cynthiaerivo, & @theacademy for honoring my mother’s memory so beautifully,” Luft wrote in an emotional post. “Myself and my family are very grateful. All Love, Lorna .”

Grande, 31, who plays Glinda in the 2024 Wicked movie adaptation, delivered a breathtaking rendition of the classic ballad, originally sung by Garland’s Dorothy in the 1939 film. The performance kicked off the star-studded night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, leaving many in the audience teary-eyed.

In true Grande fashion, the singer’s look was just as stunning as her vocals. She paid homage to Dorothy’s ruby slippers with a dazzling, custom Daniel Roseberry gown featuring 150,000 Siam sequins, matching red heels with bows, and a dramatic tulle skirt. The most talked-about detail? A surprise 3D trompe l’oeil shoe placed between her shoulder blades, making a bold fashion statement.

Grande wasn’t the only one delivering show-stopping moments. Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in Wicked, wowed audiences with her powerful rendition of Home from The Wiz, donning a strapless gown inspired by Diana Ross’ 1978 Wiz movie look. The two then joined forces for a jaw-dropping duet of Defying Gravity, where Erivo hit the final high notes as Grande stepped aside, letting her co-star shine.

Both actresses were nominated for Oscars for their Wicked performances, adding even more excitement to the evening. The film itself scored 10 nominations and took home two major wins—Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell and Best Production Design for Lee Sandales and Nathan Crowley. Tazewell also made history as the first Black man to win in his category.

With Wicked Part One now available on Prime Video and Apple TV+, and the highly anticipated Wicked: For Good set to hit theaters on Nov. 21, 2025, fans are in for even more magical moments ahead.
