Toby Keith’s family marked the first anniversary of his death on February 5, honoring the country music icon who passed away at age 62. The tribute came nearly three years after Toby was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
Toby’s daughter, Krystal Keith, shared an emotional message on Instagram, posting photos of her father throughout the years. She reflected on the past year, writing, “It feels like yesterday we said goodbye, yet it’s also been the longest year without him. I’m grateful for the time we had together as a family.”
Krystal, 39, spoke about the deep bond Toby shared with his grandchildren, adding, “It’s hard to find a candid picture where he’s not holding one of our babies. He was their favorite, and they were his.” She also mentioned the pain felt by her daughters, Kirby and Hensley, who miss their grandfather, but find comfort in the belief they will see him again.
She concluded, “Until then, he will watch over us and walk beside us. Every sunset, which he loved, reminds us to live our best life and do good in the world. That’s what we’ll do.”
Toby’s son, Stelen, also shared a tribute, posting a video of his father singing and playing guitar to his 2003 song “If I Was Jesus.” He captioned the post, “A whole year without my hero. Here’s to one day having more of these nights. Love you dad.”
The family’s Instagram also shared a tribute, featuring a photo of Toby smiling and holding a red solo cup on stage. The post read, “We can’t believe it’s been a year since the world lost Toby. We have a hole in our heart and lives. The love and support from the community Toby created continues to fill us with gratitude. We know he’d be proud of the legacy he left. Today, let’s celebrate him and listen to his music.”
In June, a tribute concert was held in Nashville to honor Toby’s legacy. Stars like Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Jelly Roll performed, with proceeds benefiting The Toby Keith Foundation and Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital. Toby was also honored at the ACM Awards in May, with Jason Aldean performing “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” a moment that brought Toby’s family to tears.
Most recently, in January, Jelly Roll paid tribute to Toby by covering “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” during his performance at Nashville’s Big Bash.
Toby’s death was officially announced on February 6, 2024, with a message reading, “Toby Keith passed peacefully on February 5 surrounded by his family. He fought with grace and courage.” The family requested privacy during this difficult time.
