A performance at Liverpool’s iconic Cavern Club took a truly unforgettable turn , when Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day, made an unexpected appearance. Armstrong was spotted filming Callum McMorran, a local musician, as he performed Green Day’s classic 1997 ballad, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” on an acoustic guitar.

The footage, shared on the Cavern Club’s social media page, shows McMorran strumming the familiar chords while Armstrong can be seen recording the performance on his phone. The caption accompanying the post read: “Imagine performing a @greenday song to Billie Joe Armstrong… Well, our resident @callummcmorran got to on The Cavern Club front stage.”

McMorran, who previously appeared on The Voice UK in 2015, also shared the memorable moment on his own Instagram. His post read: “Cool moment tonight”, accompanied by footage of the singer playing the Green Day song to Armstrong. Over the video, McMorran humorously added: “When you’re playing a Green Day song…to the guy who wrote it.”

In addition to the heartwarming video, the Cavern Club shared a photo of Armstrong later in the evening, posing with a red phone booth, with the caption: “When Rock legends come to visit. Billie Joe Armstrong at The Cavern Club.”

The song “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” holds a special place in Green Day’s discography. Featured on their 1997 album Nimrod, the song was inspired by Armstrong’s feelings about a former girlfriend who left for Ecuador. The song went on to become a global anthem and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Liverpool’s Cavern Club, an iconic venue known for hosting The Beatles during the early days of their career, continues to host live performances and maintain its place in rock ‘n’ roll history. McMorran, a regular performer there, is also a familiar face at the club.

In other Green Day-related news, Armstrong continues to embrace his love for music covers with his side project, The Coverups. In February 2024, Armstrong and bandmate Mike Dirnt performed in London, inviting Courtney Love on stage for a special set. Love, who turned 60 this year, treated fans to renditions of Cheap Trick hits like “Surrender” and even teased a potential Hole reunion.
