Ariana Grande recently reflected on one of her most unforgettable wardrobe mishaps, recalling a moment of stage chaos that left her in stitches.
In a candid round of “Never Have I Ever” with her Wicked co-stars Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey, the 31-year-old singer-actress got personal, admitting to a hilarious costume malfunction that happened during a live performance. As the trio played the game for British Vogue, Grande revealed, “Never have I ever had a costume mishap,” only to quickly flip her paddle to the “I have” side with a sheepish grin, setting the stage for her story.
“My bra came open one time on stage,” Ariana shared, almost as if she couldn’t quite believe it herself.
Erivo, ever the expressive one, responded with an exaggerated gasp, “Oh my god, yes! You didn’t even feel the breeze, it was just there.”
Grande continued, humorously recounting, “It just fell. To the ground.”
Fans believe Grande is talking about a notorious moment from her Dangerous Woman tour in 2017, when she struggled with her bra clasp mid-performance. In footage captured by fans, Ariana can be seen attempting to fix the malfunction during her hit song “Into You.” Despite the valiant efforts of one of her backup dancers to help, the clasp wouldn’t budge, forcing Ariana to continue the performance, bra in hand, for the rest of the song.
The awkward (and hilarious) wardrobe snafu only added to her already charismatic stage presence that night, which was captured in full glory for fans in the audience.
Wicked moments have been taking over the headlines recently for Grande, especially as she navigates the press tour with her fellow castmates. In a heartfelt video posted by Out.com on November 19, the trio was moved to learn that many of their queer fans had found deep personal meaning in the lyrics of Wicked‘s iconic song “Defying Gravity.”
Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the highly anticipated film, was visibly touched, replying, “I didn’t know that was happening. That’s really powerful. That’s what I wanted.”
She went on to explain how Elphaba’s journey was all about finding strength in her struggle, a message that resonated deeply with fans. “It’s really important for [Elphaba] not to let the things that have hurt her, that have stripped her of her humanity, keep her down,” Erivo said, referencing the defiant spirit of her character.
Meanwhile, Grande’s supportive bond with Erivo has captured hearts online. In one viral moment from the interview, Ariana tenderly held one of Cynthia’s long fingernails—an act of solidarity that seemed to symbolize their deep friendship. The image of Grande’s gentle gesture quickly made its rounds on social media, with fans laughing and marveling at how it captured a rare moment of vulnerability and affection between the two stars.
“I’ve officially been thinking about Ariana holding Cynthia’s nail for a full day,” one commenter wrote. “I see this image every time I close my eyes.”
