The Voice playoffs kicked off on Tuesday, November 19, with Gwen Stefani narrowing down her top five contestants to just two for the upcoming live shows. The emotional episode featured performances from each of Stefani’s remaining team members, with special guest advisor Machine Gun Kelly, or MGK, assisting in the preparation process.
The episode opened with Jose Luis, who delivered a powerful rendition of Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama.” Next up was Jake Tankersley, who performed Cody Johnson’s “The Painter,” an emotional choice that brought him to tears as he reflected on his wife. Gabrielle Zabosky followed with an emotional performance of Roxette’s “Listen to Your Heart.”
Jan Dan then took the stage with a stirring version of Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind,” which moved Stefani to tears. Finally, Sydney Sterlace closed the show with a performance of Taylor Swift’s “Betty,” impressing not only Stefani but also fellow coach Michael Bublé, who called her a “superstar.”
After all five contestants had performed, Stefani faced the difficult task of selecting only two to advance to the live shows. Addressing her team, she expressed her pride in their growth and her honor in being their coach. “This is really, really difficult,” Stefani said. “I’m going by who I think I can coach and help grow into that identity they already have.”
Stefani’s first choice was Jan Dan, whom she described as “unique” with a perspective that she believed needed to be shared with a wider audience. “He’s just… too unique. He has so much taste, and he has such a perspective,” Stefani said in a follow-up one-on-one interview. “I just wanted to give him the opportunity to share that with America in the lives.”
Her second pick was Sydney Sterlace, whose raw emotionality on stage made a lasting impact on Stefani. “It was just a gut feeling. She moves me. She gets on that stage and I want to see more,” Stefani explained. “I just can’t let her go home.”
With these selections, Stefani moves forward in the competition with Jan Dan and Sydney Sterlace as her representatives in the live shows, leaving behind the other contestants in a highly emotional decision process.
