Apple TV+ has officially announced the production of a fully authorized documentary about the legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac, in collaboration with The Kennedy/Marshall Company, White Horse Pictures, and renowned director Frank Marshall. The documentary, set to explore the band’s extraordinary history, was revealed on Tuesday, November 19.
Frank Marshall, who has directed acclaimed music documentaries such as The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story, expressed his fascination with Fleetwood Mac’s unique story. “I am fascinated by how this incredible story of enormous musical achievement came about,” Marshall said in a press release. “Fleetwood Mac somehow managed to merge their often chaotic and almost operatic personal lives into their own tale in real-time, which then became legend. This will be a film about the music and the people who created it.”
The documentary will mark the first time that Fleetwood Mac, the Grammy Award-winning band inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, will share their story in their own words. The group’s most iconic lineup included Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie (who passed away in November 2022), Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks, although various members, including Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, Jeremy Spencer, and Bob Welch, have been part of the band throughout its history.
Producer Nicholas Ferrall expressed his excitement about the project, noting, “We are thrilled to continue our creative partnership with Frank and the talented team at Kennedy/Marshall.”
The documentary will delve into Fleetwood Mac’s remarkable 50-plus-year career, highlighting their groundbreaking recordings, record-breaking tours, and providing rare, behind-the-scenes content, including never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews, and archival interviews with the late Christine McVie. Fans can expect a deep dive into the band’s individual talents, their collective magic, and the emotional highs and lows that have shaped their legacy.
Fleetwood Mac has sold over 220 million records globally, and the documentary promises to offer fresh insights into their enduring influence on the music industry.
In an Instagram post, the band shared a message with fans, referencing their 1977 album Rumours. “It’s not a Rumour,” the post stated. “From director Frank Marshall, this Apple Original Films documentary will take you on the epic journey of the generation-defining Fleetwood Mac.”
At this time, a release date or title for the documentary has not been announced.
